Buon Appetito, Little Italy, San Diego

Kristof and I arrived late in San Diego last night (thanks once again to BA, the world's least reliable airline) and I was pretty much dreading having to eat room service, since San Diego is notorious as a town where people eat early and lots of places are closing at 10. We walked the couple of blocks from the Doubletree Downtown (Wofgang Puck coffee in the rooms is a nice gimmick, otherwise a dull hotel) and walked into Buon Appetito because is still looked pretty busy. Most of the crowd seemed to be groups of girlfriends, having a good time, but there were a couple of dating pairs too.

We had time for just one course. I went for Orecchiette alla Barese ($14.95) described on the menu as "ear shaped pasta tossed with broccoli rabe, Italian sausage and fresh chopped tomatoes." The sauce was great, especially the sausage meat, but the shell shaped pasta was clumped together, shell in shell and it looked to me like the dish had been rushed out.

I had a glass of Borgo Magredo prosecco at $7.75 too, which was fine.

Kristof had the Osso Buco special, which came served with a creamy risotto rice. The marrow was tasty, but the meat was a bit underseasoned, though perfectly broiled.

Service was straighforward, as probably befit the time we ate. Overall the food was a pleasant surprise and I'd probably eat there again if I was a local.
