ESCADOS Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse 29, Berlin

Located right next to Alexanderplatz Escados can't be missed, with bright eye-watering neon signs announcing it and sister restaurant Las Olas. Ok, so why is there a picture of an indoor water feature where the food should be? Well, frankly the fountain, pool and bridge that you cross just after entering the restaurant are rather more interesting than the food.
Don't get me wrong - Escados is a very convivial place to spend an evening and the presentation of the food, from the expansive salad bar to the choice of L, XL, or XXL steaks is spot on. It's just the taste that falls a bit flat. I went with the salad bar to start - good, fresh food but nothing exciting to taste except maybe some mild jalapeno and gentle cream cheese in peppers.

Then an XL Rib-eye steak “Argentina” (500g/18oz), "juicily grilled" with fresh fried vegetables and crispy baked bread that looked stunning - but tasted of nothing much. My heart sank after the first bite and even seasoning and adding their herb butter didn't much help. I was very full but unsatisfied. Desserts were mostly Haagen Dazs ices by the scoop or a couple of fresh choices - including waffles or “Rote Grütze” - red fruit slightly stewed and thickened with vanilla sauce.

Escados is keen to point out it's more than just a steakhouse; they do offer poultry, fish and lamb as well as beef. To their credit they managed a rather decent looking plate of vegetarian food too, even though it wasn't on the menu.

My salad cost 7,50e and the steak 18,50e.
