Built to appease the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles, Sarah Winchester's 160+ room folly is extraordinary not just for staircases that go nowhere, windows with no view and doors that open on precipitous drops, but also for innovations: a conservatory where excess water runs off into the garden, a corridor of fireplaces and heat vents for treating arthritis. And of course the seance room which has one entrance and three exits (really.) Brilliant, one of my favourite places on earth and actually improved by the slightly hokey tourist trap atmosphere.
