At Reinhard's in Berlin you are surrounded by vintage art and bric-a-brac that brings to mind the Germany of Christopher Isherwood.
A superb starter of snails, served in a garlic butter was followed by "Das Geheimnis aus dem Kaiserhof" a juicy steak in "a particularly refined sauce from the Hotel Kaiserhof". This sauce was created for the impressionist painter Max Liebermann who ate it several times weekly; and always kept top secret (not clear how it got into Reinhard's hands). Served with pommes frites and a mixed salad. The restaurant also has a very jolly signature 'Reinhard's Dessert' of 'Mousse au chocolat, Tirami su, Parfait und Früchte'.
A selection of other dishes showed fresh ingredients, well cooked and generally sauced. If French-inspired German cuisine is your thing you'll be in heaven.
Prices reasonable (~20 euro for my main course.) A fun place to eat, with sharp service and good food.
