Shin Yeh 34-1, ShuangCheng Street Taipei 104 Taiwan

Luckily I visited Taipei with someone who has been several times before so rather than face a run in with the guide books or eat in our hotel (even if it's the brilliant Landis) we were straight in a taxi to what we were ensured was "one of the best places to get a taste of the real Taiwan."

It's been said before that if you aren't lucky enough to be invited to try someone's home-cookin gin Taipei then Shin Yeh is the next best thing.

The crowd was pretty much all Taiwanese, though English menus and speaking were no problem, the restaurant was packed at 9pm. We tried about eight dishes and all were uniformly delishious, though not that far in style from mainland dishes.

The staff were lovely and showed us how everything should be done. Even though I speak no more than a couple of phrases of Chinese communicating was no problem.

Overall lots of fun and worth seeking out, but if you're only in Taiwan for a couple of days I'd make sure to fit in a hotpot place and one of the night markets before hitting a more trad restaurant like this one.
