Arcadia, San Jose

There is no getting away from the fact that Arcadia occupies a truly horrible space, better suited to a hotel coffee bar. A situation not helped by a combination of over loud music and, the night we ate, a large group that gave noisy speeches. AFAIC that's poor form in such a public space.

A starter of lobster corn dogs was interesting but just a little better to look at than to eat. The Ahi Tuna Tartar was better - and had the added theatre of being mixed at the table. Main of 'cowboy' rib eye steak was very good - perfectly cooked. Duck fat fries were nice too but the asparagus was over seasoned and vinegary. Banana tart was pleasant but the least impressive of three banana dishes I tried this week, beaten by both The Plumed Horse and California Cafe. Pot of chocolate mouse was neat, with several distinct layers of flavour, but was accompanied by dull beignets. Overall the food was decent but I doubt I'll be back due to the noise and lack of ambiance. For a Michael Mina place, Arcadia is very pedestrian.
